Winter Update

...freezing temperatures outside and everything covered in white. It must be winter.

I have been plenty busy working away and feeding my wood burning oven to keep me warm. Only recently I discovered some great interviews with some fantastic fellow story artists currently working in the USA (on the schoolism website). I have not had the time to listen to all of them, but I can highly recommend (to those of you interested in story art) these ones for now:

Also I have been listening to most of the interviews on the animationguild blog.

Going through my hard drive over the holidays I rediscovered two quicktimes I boarded a couple years ago. Created from a simple, few sentence outline with a 2.5 minutes cap and no dialogue (you have to provide your own sound effects while watching). There was a comfortable amount of freedom interpreting the outline while doing them, except for the fixed budget. The episodes were then finished directly by an animator in a cut out style and aired as animated segments during a kids show. Unfortunately I have never had the chance to see the aired version of these to episodes.

E-Learning: Roche

in 2010 tobias created a 10 page comic book for roche diagnostics, which is used as an internal workshop. the brochure is a complete e-learning seminar covering specific it security issues. the workshop was created bi-lingual (english/german).

in 2009 tobias created a series of promotional cartoons for the medlinq software company. the cartoon were created bilingual and used on the company website and for print.

crockidz: comic strips

the crockidz comic strips are being created since 2007 and started as a daily blog entry in english only on the tobitoon BLOG.
tobias has translated a selection of these strips between 2009 and 2011 into german and created their own online presence. in 2011 they had their first exhibition in uelzen. please visit www.crockidz.com to read more of the comics.

the crockidz: comic strips are drawn with pencil on paper ( A4/ 80g printing paper), inked and colored digital with photoshop on a cintiq.

Lauras Star: the chase (2011)

tobias created several sequences for the animated feature film production “lauras stern:traumonster” in 2009. the boards were pitched to the director as edited quicktime versions (without sound).
the artwork was produced digitally with photoshop, osX, cintic

in this sequence we watch the “lightcatcher” trying to capture the “star”. the lightcatcher job is keeping the dreamworld free of light. he built many devices for capturing different kinds of light. he had never seen a real star before and is fascinated by this strange appearance. this was the original pitch for the story, which was later altered to its final version where the lightcatcher actually captures the star.
